Every dealer eventually develops a way of talking about diamonds that separates the essential from the ornamental. What follows is ours — condensed from the hundred conversations we have each month across the light rig, and written for the buyer we would want to be in front of.
A stone is not a shopping decision the way a watch is. It arrives with a report, a provenance, a set of measurements to reconcile against the eye. The report is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.
There is a temptation, particularly online, to buy the number and skip the room. The number is only ever a shorthand. The room is where you learn what colour looks like at G versus H, what a well-cut pavilion does with morning light versus evening incandescent, whether the stone your eye keeps returning to is the same one your budget was aimed at.
The short version: prioritise cut. Buy the report. Ask to see the stone under three light sources. If the seller shows you one, ask why. Take a friend who does not want anything from you. And — this is the least dealer-flattering advice we can give — do not buy on the first viewing unless the stone is truly, distinctly, hand-picked-for-you.
